Waymo has responded to ongoing complaints from San Francisco residents about its driverless vehicles honking their horns during the night.
Neighbors in the South of Market area reported frequent honking from Waymo vehicles, particularly at 4 a.m., disrupting their sleep. Videos from residents showed the autonomous vehicles honking as they maneuvered in and out of parking spots.
On Tuesday, Waymo announced that it had updated its software to reduce noise from its electric vehicles. However, residents continued to report disturbances, with vehicles honking early Wednesday morning after the update inadvertently directed them to a cul-de-sac. Waymo has since issued another fix to address this issue.
The company explained that the Waymo honking issue stemmed from a new feature introduced in January, designed to prevent low-speed collisions by alerting drivers if other cars are too close while reversing. Waymo acknowledged the problem and has apologized to affected residents.
