Retail giant Walmart has announced the addition of 400 Chevrolet BrightDrop electric vans to its U.S. home delivery fleet. The deployment of these cutting-edge vehicles will span several major markets, including Austin, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, northwest Arkansas, Orlando, and the San Francisco Bay Area, by the end of this year.
These BrightDrop vans will be utilized for Walmart’s InHome service, which provides grocery delivery directly from stores to nearby customer homes. GM and Walmart previously conducted a successful pilot program with the vans, receiving positive feedback from employees on the vehicles’ driver aids, automated features, and ease of use.
The 400 vans Walmart is adding are the shorter-wheelbase BrightDrop 400 model, with a longer BrightDrop 600 van also available. GM estimates the standard battery pack will provide 159 miles of range, while the larger optional pack offers an impressive 272 miles.
GM launched the BrightDrop brand in January 2021, but recently folded it into the Chevrolet lineup. Production of the vans takes place at GM’s CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, which has been manufacturing BrightDrop vehicles since late 2021. Other early BrightDrop customers include FedEx and the Ryder rental fleet.
