Tesla has announced a recall of approximately 9,100 Model X SUVs in the United States due to a problem with the roof trim. This recall, which affects 2016 model year vehicles, addresses concerns that the trim pieces may separate from the roof, potentially posing a road hazard.
The tesla roof trim issue stems from the roof cosmetic trim pieces, which may have been adhered without primer, leading to possible detachment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that this could increase the risk of a crash. This is Tesla’s second recall over this issue since 2020.
The company, founded by Elon Musk, has stated that changes were made to the supplier’s process in July 2016 to prevent this problem in later models. Tesla plans to test the adhesion of the roof trim and reattach it as needed, free of charge for the vehicle owners.
Tesla has been investigating reports and conducting tests on vehicles affected by the previous recall since 2022. The company determined that the previous recall remedy was insufficient for detecting trim pieces that might detach due to the lack of primer. Although Tesla has received about 170 related reports, there have been no reported crashes or injuries linked to this concern.
