The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating complaints regarding power loss, unexpected shifts into park, and emergency brake activation in some Ram pickup trucks and Jeep Wagoneer SUVs.
The probe, announced Monday, involves approximately 150,000 vehicles from the 2022 model year, all featuring Stellantis’ 5.7-liter Hemi e-Torque mild hybrid system. This system converts energy captured from braking to power electrical components and includes a 48-volt battery pack and motor generator that assists the crankshaft during gear changes.
NHTSA has received 80 Ram and Jeep complaints from owners reporting engine shutdowns, often at low speeds, with some unable to restart their vehicles. The investigation will focus on the affected models, the frequency of the issue, and the underlying cause. A recall could be possible.
Stellantis stated it is cooperating with the probe into issues of power loss in Ram and Jeep units and advised owners experiencing these issues to contact their dealership. The company previously recalled about 131,000 Ram pickups and Wagoneers last April due to power loss from an overly rich air-fuel mixture. However, the latest engine stalling complaints are likely related to an electrical problem.
