Hyundai has issued a recall for 1,545 Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, spanning model years 2019 to 2024, due to a risk of flammable hydrogen gas leaks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was notified that the vehicles’ pressure relief devices, designed to vent gas through a glass bulb during tank overheating, might fail. The glass bulb is susceptible to microcracks, potentially fracturing prematurely and releasing hydrogen gas during normal operations.
Owners may notice a loud wind-rushing sound, a white fog-like cloud near the vehicle’s rear, a rapid decline in the fuel gauge, and an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp if the defect occurs.
Hyundai plans to remedy the issue by replacing the glass bulbs with a more robust metal safety device. While the Hyundai Nexo recall repairs are conducted, the company advises owners to park their vehicles outdoors, away from structures.
