The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched two investigations into potential defects in Ford vehicles. The probes focus on complaints about seatbelt retractor malfunctions in Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, as well as loss of motive power in Ford Broncos and Mavericks.
NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received three complaints regarding unintended deployment of seatbelt retractor pretensioners in 2019-2020 Ford Expeditions, with similar reports from 2018-2019 Lincoln Navigator owners. Affected owners described hearing a loud sound before the seatbelt rapidly tightened and locked in place without any crash or impact.
The motive-power probe addresses 15 complaints from Bronco and Maverick owners who reported persistent issues after a prior recall remedy. Ford said it is cooperating with NHTSA on these investigations.
Last week, Ford agreed to pay a substantial civil penalty to NHTSA for failing to file timely and accurate recall reports. The automaker, facing mounting quality control challenges, says it is committed to resolving these issues.
