The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a warning about the dangers of substandard air bag inflators, following the deaths of three people and serious injuries to two others in the last nine months.
The fatalities and injuries were linked to low-cost, poorly manufactured replacement inflators installed after previous accidents. These devices failed during subsequent crashes, projecting metal fragments at vehicle occupants.
The NHTSA noted that these replacement parts are typically produced by lesser-known foreign manufacturers and are sold at significantly lower prices than genuine parts. They are often purchased online and installed by less reputable service providers. The agency advises used car buyers to always check vehicle history for prior accidents and to get air bags inspected by independent mechanics to verify the authenticity of the parts.
Historically, defective air bag inflators, like those made by Takata, have been linked to over 30 deaths globally since 2009 due to metal shrapnel being propelled into passenger compartments.
