BYD, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced a recall of nearly 100,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus models due to a defective steering control unit that could potentially lead to vehicle fires. The recall affects 96,714 vehicles produced between November 2, 2022, and December 26, 2023, according to a statement filed with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.
The issue stems from a faulty electronic power steering column assembly (CEPS) controller, which may develop micro-cracks that could lead to overheating and short circuits. To address this hazard, BYD dealers will install new installation pads at no cost to owners, who will be notified through mail, phone, and WeChat.
These models, which include the Dolphin and Yuan Plus (known as Atto 3 in overseas markets), accounted for more than a quarter of BYD’s total sales in 2023 and are increasingly appearing in global markets. It remains unclear whether the models intended for export are affected by this BYD recall.
This issue is significant as it represents BYD’s largest to date, far surpassing the recall of fewer than 10,000 Tang PHEV models in 2022.
