BMW has initiated a second recall for 8,725 X3 SUVs spanning the 2018-2022 model years due to concerns that previously fixed cargo rails may still pose a risk. The affected vehicles, which had already been subject to a recall in July for loose interior cargo rails, were found to potentially have inadequately secured rails that could become projectiles in a crash.
This follow-up BMW SUV recall comes after the company discovered that some vehicles repaired during the initial recall might have received incorrect bolt sizes, making the fix ineffective. The automaker’s investigation revealed that the bolts provided in some repair kits were too short. Consequently, BMW has sent replacement bolts of the correct length to dealerships to ensure the cargo rails are properly secured.
Dealers are instructed to replace the bolts free of charge, as mandated by law. BMW is actively reaching out to owners of the affected vehicles to bring their SUVs in for the revised repair. This is a precautionary measure to prevent any potential injuries from unsecured cargo rails during accidents.
Vehicle owners concerned about the safety of their BMW X3 can verify whether their vehicle is affected by visiting the NHTSA recall center.
