BMW is recalling more than 100,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the starter motor that could lead to overheating, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The BMW cars recall affects 105,558 crossovers and sedans, including popular models like the X5, X7, and the 3 and 7 Series. The NHTSA explained that if the starter motor fails, repeated attempts to start the vehicle could cause it to overheat due to an electrical overload.
To address the issue, BMW will provide a software update for affected vehicles. The update will be performed for free at authorized dealerships, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed out late next month.
Vehicle owners can check if their car is part of the recall by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the BMW website. The NHTSA website also offers an option to search using the VIN, license plate number, or by entering the vehicle’s year, make, and model.
