BMW Group is facing significant financial impacts as it initiates a recall affecting over 1.5 million vehicles globally due to a faulty braking system.
Announced on Tuesday, the Munich-based automaker revealed that addressing the defect, supplied by an external vendor, will cost a “high three-digit million euro amount” this quarter alone. The recall includes various models such as select BMW X series, the 5 and 7 Series, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and MINI Cooper and Countryman, manufactured between June 2022 and August 2024.
The BMW global recall, initially detected during an internal quality check and leading to a safety recall in February, has since expanded in scope, now encompassing approximately 1.53 million vehicles across China, the U.S., Germany, Korea, and France.
With 1.2 million vehicles already with customers and another 320,000 either with BMW or at dealerships, the company is taking extensive measures to address the safety concerns. This includes halting deliveries of affected vehicles and developing diagnostic software to detect the brake fault before any incident occurs.
For those with vehicles impacted by the recall, BMW is offering diagnostic checks and system replacements at no cost at authorized dealerships. If a malfunction occurs, the system will enter a “safe mode” that still allows braking but requires more force by the driver.
