Chrysler has issued a new recall for its Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid minivans due to an ongoing fire risk linked to flaws in the battery pack. This latest recall affects Pacificas from the 2017 to 2021 model years, expanding on a previous recall.
The initial recall involved a software update designed to monitor battery conditions and prevent fires, but it proved ineffective. Chrysler reports that several vans caught fire even after the previous recall work was performed. The problem is traced to a high-voltage battery pack that may have a folded or torn node tab, creating a lithium by-product. A “second unidentified factor” could combine with the lithium by-product to cause an internal short, leading to a fire.
The new Chrysler Pacifica recall affects 19,556 Pacifica PHEVs in the United States. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the new fix, which includes revised software and potential battery replacement, is implemented. Chrysler will begin notifying owners directly on September 6.
