General Motors is indefinitely postponing the production of its GM Origin autonomous vehicle as its Cruise self-driving unit focuses on relaunching operations.
Cruise will now prioritize the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt for autonomous vehicle development, shifting away from the Origin due to cost and regulatory uncertainties. This decision, announced in a letter to shareholders Tuesday, follows the discontinuation of the previous Bolt models used by Cruise.
The delay resulted in roughly $600 million in special charges for GM in the second quarter. Production was halted in November after a Cruise robotaxi incident in San Francisco, where a pedestrian was dragged. An investigation revealed cultural issues and poor leadership within Cruise.
Despite these setbacks, Cruise has resumed supervised driving in Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, and Dubai but has not yet relaunched in San Francisco.
