The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles following reports of severe engine issues that could lead to engine failure. This follows Honda’s November 2023 recall of 249,000 U.S. vehicles equipped with 3.5-liter V6 engines after discovering a manufacturing defect in the crankshaft, potentially causing the connecting rod bearing to wear prematurely.
The probe into Honda engine failures aims to assess whether additional 2016-2020 model vehicles should be included in the recall. According to NHTSA, 173 reports indicate similar issues not currently covered by the recall, affecting Acura MDX, Acura TLX, Honda Pilot, Honda Ridgeline, and Honda Odyssey models.
Honda stated it is cooperating with NHTSA’s inquiry and has been working with the agency since 2020 on the issue. As part of the recall, Honda dealers are inspecting affected vehicles and repairing or replacing engines if necessary.
