Fiat is recalling 15,835 of its 124 Spider sports cars due to a software defect that may cause airbags to deploy with excessive force, increasing the risk of injury. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that the issue involves incorrect accelerometer voltage specifications in the airbag control modules.
The Fiat Spider recall affects 2017 to 2020 models produced between March 31, 2016, and August 31, 2020. The defect could lead to a dual-stage front airbag deployment instead of a single-stage deployment in certain crashes, causing the airbags to exceed federal safety standards related to neck injuries.
Mazda, responsible for assembling the 124 Spider, informed Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) of the potential problem in July. After joint investigations, both companies agreed to initiate a voluntary safety recall earlier this month.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin notifying affected owners in November. Dealers will update the airbag control module software free of charge to resolve the issue. Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA’s recall website.
