General Motors is recalling approximately 449,000 vehicles due to a software error that may prevent the brake warning light from activating when brake fluid levels are low, potentially increasing the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects certain 2023 models of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, as well as 2023-2024 models of Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. The NHTSA reports that all of these vehicles have the software glitch.
A GM engineer discovered the issue on April 18 during a brake fluid leak test when the brake warning light failed to illuminate. The problem was traced to a mismatch between the electronic brake control module’s software and its calibrations. GM implemented a software update for vehicles produced after August 1.
Owners of affected vehicles in the GM recall will receive notification letters by October 28 and can resolve the issue through an over-the-air software update or by visiting a dealership for a free fix. The company stated it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this defect.
