American car rental giant Avis has notified customers of a data breach that compromised personal information after attackers gained access to one of its business applications.
The breach, which occurred between August 3 and August 6, exposed customer data, including names and other sensitive information. Avis responded by removing the attackers from its systems and blocking further access by August 6.
The company launched an investigation with external cybersecurity experts and reported the breach to authorities. Avis has since enhanced its security measures, implementing additional safeguards and closely monitoring its systems. Impacted customers have been advised to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud risks by regularly reviewing account statements and credit reports.
As part of its response, Avis is offering affected customers a free one-year membership to Equifax’s credit monitoring service for identity theft detection and assistance.
