California is poised to establish a new standard in automotive safety with the potential adoption of Senate Bill 961, which Governor Gavin Newsom is currently reviewing.
If signed into law, the bill mandates that most new vehicles sold or leased in the state from 2030 must be equipped with a passive intelligent speed assistance system.
This technology would notify drivers with a one-time audio and visual alert when they exceed the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour, similar to a seatbelt reminder.
The bill has passed both the state senate and assembly and now awaits the governor’s decision. The California new speed alert specifies that only vehicles with the necessary technologies, such as front-facing cameras or GPS, would need to comply, sparing motorcycles and lower-spec vehicles from the requirement.
