BMW is recalling more than 720,000 vehicles due to a water pump issue that could potentially cause a fire.
The recall involves certain X1, X3, X5 models, and others, although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not specified the exact models or model years affected.
The BMW water pump issue arises from water pumps with insufficient sealing, which can allow fluid to enter the electrical plug connector, potentially causing a short circuit and, in some cases, a fire.
Affected owners will need to take their vehicles to an authorized BMW center for repairs at no cost. The centers will inspect and replace water pumps and plug connectors as necessary and install a shield to divert any fluid away from the pump. BMW will begin notifying owners of the recall starting in October.
