As Labor Day approaches, many Californians are gearing up for a weekend getaway. Labor Day falls on Monday, September 2, 2024, and if you’re among those planning to travel, here are some key Labor Day weekend road tips to keep in mind.
Travel Timing: The busiest travel days will be Thursday and Friday afternoons, according to Doug Shupe, corporate communications manager at the Auto Club‘s Los Angeles office. To avoid the worst of the traffic, Shupe recommends hitting the road early, around 8 or 9 a.m. on those days.
On Saturday, it’s better to leave around noon or 1 p.m., as many travelers will have already departed in the morning. If possible, consider returning on Tuesday to avoid heavy traffic on Monday, when many vacationers will be heading home.
Driving Tips:
- Get Plenty of Rest: Aim for at least seven hours of sleep before driving.
- Follow Speed Limits: Stay safe and avoid tickets, especially with the California Highway Patrol out in full force.
- Avoid Distractions: Don’t drive intoxicated or use your smartphone while driving; both are equally dangerous.
- Pack Smart: Storing luggage inside your car rather than on top will help save on gas.
